Shadow In Hawthorn Bay, by Janet Lunn REVIEW

Shadow in Hawthorn Bay, by Janet Lunn

I love its cover! Haha. This 216-page book told us about Mairi Urquhart, a fifteen-year-old girl, who has the gift of ‘second sight’, which led her to come to Upper Canada to meet her cousin, Duncan Cameron. But when she arrived there, she got a surprise which led her to find herself!

This story is interesting because its setting, which took in 1800s, where it would take months to travel from Highlands to Upper Canada, because at that time, people didn’t have modern transportation like nowadays. And to see how they’d dealt with things which are easy for us in these days were such an adventure. From this book, I know how English was being used by people in the other side of the earth, such as:

“Them’s squashes and pumpkins”

“We eats the miserable things all winter”

And some words:
‘et’ means ‘eat’
‘brung’ means ‘brought’
‘git’ means ‘get’
‘mebbe’ means ‘maybe’

Now I know how the ‘World-English’ are being used by people in particular country I particular year and I love it!!
